Make it your new year’s resolution to come to Grand Raggidy Roller Girl’s first double-header of 2012 on Saturday, January 28th! After coming back from a two week break, these roller girls are roaring and ready to play a home bout. A special shout out to the new 2012 captains: Trashy Twolips and Stomper Facin for the All-Stars, Miz D Molisher and Kelsey Slammer for the G-Rap Attack! and Snickers McNasty, leading our newest fresh-meat team, the Rapid Assault! With new captains and a fresh outlook, the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls are hitting harder than ever and are determined to send their travel team to regionals this year.

Doors are open at 5pm and the G-Rap Attack! takes the floor at 6 against the South Bend Roller Girls from Northern Indiana. South Bend Roller Girls are the first and only flat-track roller derby league from the South Bend/Mishawaka/Elkhart region and our girls are excited to welcome them to Michigan with some tough love. With some fresh faces and some seasoned veterans, the G-Rap Attack! is going to hit hard and skate to win.

After the Attack! bout, stick around for half-time to be entertained by Grand Rapid’s own Atomic Hoop Troupe, a performance group featuring professional hoop dancers. It really is a show worth seeing!

The main event of the evening will be the Grand Raggidy All-Stars vs. Queen City Roller Girls traveling all the way from Buffalo, New York. Queen City and Grand Raggidy have both been leagues for about the same amount of time. This should be a tight bout filled with lots of action. The All-Stars will be skating with the top skaters in GRRG and have their hearts set on a victory. Be sure to stay for this bout because it will be worth it!

Don’t forget that Carol’s Ferals will be pouring microbrewed beer and wine at this event. All proceeds from these sales will go towards their non-profit organization.

Hope to see you there!

So you’re into roller derby and now you want to become a skater, too. What do you do? Why, join Basic Training with the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls, of course! We only accept new skaters three times a year, and don’t worry, you don’t need any skating or derby experience. Basic Training (BT) will teach you skating form, derby safety, skills, rules and strategy all in a safe environment. BT is lead by skaters with years of experience, so you will be in good hands. Registration has begun for the first basic training session of 2012 on January 22nd. If you are interested, you must register… and fast because we only accept up to 20 new skaters each session and spots are filling up quickly! (This basic training is FULL)

Your next chance to sign up is March and then not till August. To get more details or sign up for the March session, drop us an e-mail at contact@gr-rollergirls.com.

Most Valuable Member – November

We all know that Demonica Mars is an all around great gal!  Her most recent demonstration of sure awesomeness was being nominated as the Most Valuable Member of GRRG for November!

Ms. Mars had been getting her derby on since 2007, when she skated with the Garden State Roller Girls and the infamous Gotham Girls Roller Derby league.  Demonica just joined our league in March of this year.  In that short time, she has made quite an impression on the fans and members of GRRG. She has shown us her determination and dedication as a skater for the G-Rap Attack!  At practice, she has a really great approach for teaching and explaining things that makes skills easy to master. Her smile and open attitude make her easy to talk to and work with.  Off the track, she has offered many suggestions to improve our league, including helping out with rules and training.  And if that wasn’t enough, Demonica is also the mastermind behind our newsletter.   If you haven’t seen it, sign up and see what great work she does!

When she’s not kicking butt and taking names with GRRG, Demonica keeps herself busy playing with her pooch, Milroy, kayaking, dabbling in photography and making toe guards called Skate Snouts.

When chatting about her decision to join GRRG, Demonica said, “I am really happy that I came here, it’s a great league and I am enjoying it so much.”  Well Demonica, we are ecstatic that you joined our league too!  We can’t wait to see what other tricks you have up your sleeve!
