2/21/2009 Cincinnati Recap!
Cincinnati braved the snow and slick roads to make it into GR on Friday night. By 2pm on Saturday, we were sold out! With an amazing volunteer staff, set-up went smoothly and the skaters were off to warm up to a quickly filling venue.
The G-Rap Attack picked up a quick lead and played a close back + forth game ending in a __ to __ loss. It was an incredibly close game with the the last jam starting in a tie. This was KILLy Muster and X Libris first game with the G-Rap Attack. Cincinnati awarded Best Jammer to Keisha Mei Ash and Best Blocker to Tone Loco.
The All Stars to got off to quick lead, before Cincinnati taking over and maintaining a 12-20 point lead the majority of the game resulting in a __ to __ loss for GR. This was a tremendously fast paced and hard hitting game. ShamPain4U and Hot New Girl were playing their first games as All Stars. Cincinnati awarded Best Jammer to Jackie Daniels and Best Blocker to Bette Mangler.
Congrats to Preacher’s Brat, the new GRRG MVM!
After Party Dance off Winner: Skate Crime of Cincinnati. Yeah, we lost that too
Sunday Festivities: No one showed up at brunch still in their uniform, dang! After, GRRG took Cincinnati’s Hannah Barbaric and Quad Almighty to local breweries and showed them how to handle the boot. Thanks to Sazerac, New Holland Brewing Company, Schmoz, Hopcat and Founder’s!
Thanks to some special fans in attendance: West Michigan Sports Commission and Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame representatives, Rapid Growth’s Andy Dragt, members of the Grand Rapids Speed Team, Fred’s 40th Birthday crew and Bobby J’s!
Thanks to visiting rollergirls from: Burning River, Bleeding Heartland, Fort Wayne and Killamazoo!
Roller derby - Yes you CAN!
Roller derby - Yes you CAN!
The Grand Raggidy Roller Girls - West Michigan’s first flat track roller derby league - is actively recruiting new skaters, refs and volunteers for its 2009 season. If you’re 21 years or older, we want you! Get a jump start on the next exciting chapter in your life.
There’s no reason not to give it a try!
The top 5 excuses debunked:
I’m not tough” enough:
Many of our skaters have tapped into a source of aggression and tenacity they never knew existed. Some of our fiercest competitors are total “sweethearts” off the track.
But I can’t skate:
We have coaches to teach you the process, step by step. Two of the league founders didn’t know how to skate. They now compete on a national level. Trust us, you can do it, and we’ll show you how.
This sounds fun, but I don’t want to get hurt:
Grand Raggidy needs refs and officials who aren’t afraid to keep the skaters in line. We train you on the rules and skating. You’re part of the action, minus the bruises.
I’m a serious athlete, I’m not interested in joining a “fake” sport:
Roller derby has come a long way from its WWE-like roots. The modern version is a fast-paced, hard hitting, rules oriented game with a focus on speed, agility and strength. We practice three times a week. The GRRG is a proud member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and competes on a national and local level. Some of us might wear short skirts, but we all take the game very seriously.
I want to be involved, but don’t have the time for practices:
Sign up to be a volunteer! Our staff is a vital part of the GRRG family, helping to run our bouts smoothly and allowing the skaters to focus on providing Grand Rapids with derby action.
Contact Grand Raggidy today to see how you can join our family!
Beer Brawl - December 13
Grand Raggidy Cuts Loose For Holiday FREE FOR ALL!
Does your holiday wish list include trying something a little out of the ordinary? If so, the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls have just the gift for you.
Grand Raggidy is mixing things up this holiday season with a sure-to-be-entertaining “just for fun” Battle of the Breweries. Skaters from both teams — the Grand Raggidy All-Stars and the G-Rap Attack! — were put into a pool and drafted by the brewmasters of New Holland Brewing Company and Schmohz Brewery (GRRG sponsors and supporters) for the league’s first ever “battle of the dream teams” competition.
This game marks the first time in nearly a year that the Grand Raggidy skaters will face off against one another in a public display of sisterly aggression. For those who miss seeing the rough and tumble Raggidy on Raggidy action, mark your calendars for the Battle of the Breweries on December 13.
Who wants to spend a wintery Saturday night caroling at the neighbors, or shivering in a mall parking lot and fighting over cheap computers at a big box store? Come inside to Rivertown Sports, where the skating action is always hot. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than a rousing game of Grand Raggidy roller derby as you’ve never seen it before? Plenty of surprises and hard-hitting action are in store when this game pits teammate against teammate in the regulation-length bout on the GRRG’s home turf at River Town Sports. Jammers will block, blockers will jam, up is down, and all bets are off.
Ticket prices remain the same — a reasonable $10/$12 for presale (brownpapertickets.com) or $15 at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the action begins at 6 p.m. at Rivertown Sports in Grandville (rivertownsports.com). Rink side seating is first-come, first serve, and all ages are welcome.
VIP tickets can be purchased at Schmohz Brewery or New Holland Brewery
VIP tickets allow you in at 4 p.m. and receive VIP treatment.
