Mr Brat, aka Tim Bileth, began assisting GRRG as a track setup volunteer around January 2007. He is the spouse of GRRG’s skater turned referee, Preachers’ Brat. In January of 2009, Mr. Brat took over as head of Event Coordination, becoming the first make non-skater to hold a leadership position with GRRG. His accomplishments include streamlining our bout day setup, controlling merchandise sales and inventory, and improving overall bout day experience for fans and skaters. His goal for GRRG is to keep things running smoothly so the skaters can focus on skating and winning games.

New Most Valuable Member (MVM) Announced!

Join me in congratulating Bette Mangler as GRRGs most recent MVM! Mangler has been with GRRG since 2005 and was a member of the Blue Collar Broads once teams were formed. Her first bout was on April 1, 2006, which also happened to be GRRG’s inaugural bout.

As captain of the All Stars since November 2006, she is a proven leader and a powerhouse on the track. Her killer hits make her one of our most feared and toughest blockers our there. She is a master at taking out jammers and opposing blockers, while keeping sin bin time to a minimum. The All Stars missed her dearly when she broke her wrist this year and had to miss out on a few weeks of practice and two games. Fortunately, she heeled up quickly and is back in action!! While her ‘on-the-track’ contributions are impossible to miss it the dedication she shows to the league off the track that has helped earn her the MVM award.

Bette Mangler serves as our League Treasurer and has served on the Sponsorship, PR, and Rules and Training Committees. She is currently an LLC member and continues to put endless hours into making GRRG a successful league.

She always steps in when needed to run practices, teach Basic Training sessions and take on extra responsibilities when presented.

Lewda Leveller (formerly known as the Queen of Scotch) is one of Grand Raggidy’s longest standing and most valued members! She has been involved with the league since the very beginning. She and her husband King Aiko came to our first three games back in 2006 and were signed up as volunteers by the time the fourth game rolled around. She was a member of our original Stats Katz crew and after watching her favorite girls tear it up on the track she decided she wanted to join them! She started skating in August of 2007 and played with the G-Rap Attack! until she injured her knee in December of 2008. Despite her efforts and aggressive physical therapy Lewda was not able to return to game play, but that didn’t discourage her. She has since become head of Marketing for GRRG and played a pivotal role in the development of our new website and its continuous up keep. She designs our amazing posters, new recruit packets, sponsorship packets, programs and all of the miscellaneous flyers you see us handing out. And if that’s not enough she also volunteers her time as an invaluable track manager at home and on the road for the All Stars and Attack!. She and Aiko have never missed a home game that GRRG has played at the Delta Plex or Rivertown. So to you we say “THANK YOU LEWDA”, a true example of GRRG spirit!

We are seeking a new coach to train GRRG skaters in preparation for their upcoming 2009-2010 season

Roller derby is a competitive all-female sport requiring athleticism, game and strategy knowledge, skating skills, and teamwork. Roller derby is played on a flat track with quad-style roller skates and is the fastest growing female sport of all time with seventy-plus WFTDA leagues in the US and Canada and more than 200 others worldwide.

GRRG was founded in April 2005 and typically has between 20-40 skaters and 20 support staff with current membership at 23 skaters. GRRG is a member-league of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Please see http://www.wftda.com for rules and track information.

GRRG practice three times each week: Mon (7:30-10pm), Wed (8-10pm), Sun (11am- 1pm) or (4:30-6:30pm) at locations in Kentwood and Grandville. Practice is closed for two weeks in July and again in December for the holidays. Bouts (games) are held monthly at home, Jan - May and Sept - Dec. Dates and schedules for away-bouts vary, but typically with no more than one away game per month and the majority held in the mid-west.

Coaching staff responsibility:

  1. Instruction in sports techniques, rules of competition, strategy and tactics for competitive play. Coaching candidates with no prior experience in roller derby will be expected to learn derby game-play rules.
  2. Works in conjunction with Rules and Training (R&T) Committee to achieve excellent instruction in athletic conditioning for endurance, strength, and agility. R&T meetings are held monthly.
  3. Conducting and supervising practices and bouts in a safe and fair manner. Actual coaching schedule and attendance requirements TBA.
  4. Fostering an attitude of sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethics, and responsibility to one’s team.
  5. Tracking skater and staff attendance and personal conduct.
  6. Coaching and support at bouts.

Coaching staff selections will be determined as follows:
The GRRG Rules and Training Committee will review all candidate submissions concentrating on background, experience, and training. One or more candidates will be recommended for consideration by the Board of Directors. The GRRG Board of Directors will select candidates for interview from the recommendations made by the Rules and Training Committee.

For consideration:
Please submit a letter of application along with a list of related experiences to contact@grandraggidyrollergirls.com. Suggestions include athletic play background, skating background (not required), coaching or training experiences, and any First Aid or CPR certifications.

Coaching compensations are negotiable. Compensations are considered taxable income and are paid in a single check at the end of each month.

GRRG’s welcomes back Costa Lotta Chaos, almost 1 year to date of when she left us to welcome a new baby. The rising star played a partial of the 2008 season with G-Rap Attack! and hasn’t missed a beat. All Stars key jammer Mira MaHeiney had been noticeably missed for the 2009 season, though expect to see this hot star back on the track this fall! We are thrilled to welcome these two skaters back!

Some of our new skaters have finally selected names, so forget about who they were, they’re in the derb now!

Rosie Root Canal (Brandy)

The Grand Raggidy Roller Girl’s Most Valuable Member (MVM) for the summer goes to Effie Latio. Effie continues to be one of GRRGs longest serving volunteers and her dedication is invaluable to this league. She has served as our Merch Maiden since December 2006 and most recently was appointed Head of our Merchandise Subcommittee in February 2009. As Merch Maiden she is in continuous contact with GRRG fans. Effie regularly attends GRRG BOD meetings and offers the BOD fan feedback on how we can continue to improve our merchandise and increase sales.
Effie is an English Major with a Minor in Communications. Currently she is studying to become a Technical Writer/Editor through Central Michigan University and plans to graduate December 2010.

Outside of derby and her school work Effie likes to relax with some vegetable gardening, swimming, cooking and jet skiing.

We are also extremely excited that Effie Latio strapped a pair of skates on for the first time in May 2009 and has plans of playing with GRRG in the near future!

Jackie Daniels: The woman, the myth, the legend. Renowned for her speedy jams and hard blocks, Jackie Daniels (or JD, as her derby sisters affectionately know her) has helped to bring national recognition to Grand Raggidy and local attention to the league she so passionately loves. Though widely known for her on-track, larger-than-life persona and skate skills, she is just as vital - if not more so - off the track as league President and derby ambassador extraordinare. A vital part of GRRG since the beginning days, JD logs countless hours - often at the expense of living her own, non-derby life - behind the scenes to ensure the league’s continued success. She is an LLC member, Co-Captain of the All-Stars team, a WFTDA Rep and she helps with many committees for the league such as the Rules and Training and Merchandise committees. A derby girl to the core, Jackie Daniels is truly everyone’s favorite liqueur.

The inaugural MVM for November is Hannah Stompana. “Stomp” is the volunteer coordinator for the GRRG, and has skated with the league for about a year. She devotes hours to coordinating volunteers and support staff for each and every GRRG home bout. It’s because of her hard work, organization skills and dedication that we can bring you the hard hitting action on the track. Let’s hear it for Stomp!
