The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) recently announced that the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls earned a spot in the 2009 WFTDA North Central Regional Tournament. Grand Raggidy will compete against all-star teams representing nine other roller derby leagues for a chance to advance to the fourth annual WFTDA National Championship, set for Nov. 13-15 in Philadelphia, PA.

The North Central Regional Tournament, called “Brawl of America,” will be held Sept. 18-20 in St. Paul, MN, and is expected to draw thousands of roller derby players and fans to watch some of the best action the sport has to offer. Fans wishing to cheer on Grand Raggidy as they take the national stage can find ticketing and other information at www.brawlofamerica.com.

As the 7-seeded team in the tournament, Grand Raggidy will first play 10 Seed Burning River from Cleveland, OH at 1:00pm CST on Friday, Sept. 18, and will play at least three games over the course of the three-day, multi-level tournament.

To make it to Regionals, Grand Raggidy first had to earn a ranking within the North Central Region by playing sanctioned bouts against other teams. The top ten teams from each of the four WFTDA regions, based on current rankings, received invitations to their respective regional tournaments. If a league was unable to attend, the next-ranked league was invited.

The North Central Region includes North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and central Canada. There are currently 19 WFTDA member leagues in the North Central Region.

About WFTDA
Founded in 2004, the WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women’s flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among its 78 member leagues. The governing philosophy is “by the skaters, for the skaters.” Women skaters are primary owners, managers, and operators of each member league and of the association. Operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. All member leagues have a voice in the decision-making process, and agree to comply with the governing body’s policies.
